Thursday 10/30

[Notes by Brandon]

We're getting close!  Right now our biggest challenge is sourcing the materials.  We are meeting in the gallery on Tuesday, though the time is still undecided as there is an artist lecture at 3 in EFAC.

How to get our hands on large quantities of rope/cord for cheap?  Brandon made a good point that rope can be spray painted, which would be time consuming, but cost effective.  I am starting to envision the large gauge ropes as being white or natural (they are cheaper), and then filling in with lots of plastic lacing, flagging tape, neon mason line, etc.  I just now found this on Amazon: [click here]
Non-adhesive flagging tape--all kinds of colors, $6 for 300 feet, free shipping.  It's a nice width too, but it's also a departure from the rope, which may not fit aesthetically.
Also on Amazon: [click here]
Plastic lacing--$2.50 for 300 feet, free shipping

I mentioned through e-mail too that certain colors of acrylic yarn may be used without turning the exhibition into a commentary on craft.

Giant tacks (1 inch - 1.5 inch) are available, though they are close to $5 for 12, which will add up quickly for the number of ropes we want to make moveable.  The 1/4" tacks are much cheaper of course--if our rope material is thin they should work fine.

Blunt ended yarn/tapestry needles might work too, though same pricing issue as the giant thumb tacks.

I uploaded a set of sketches that I made on the "Preliminary Visions" page [click here]--I know I voted for the cables coming up from the floor, and that the horizontal cables risk a "sewer pipe" reference, but I am really liking the idea of the seeing the PVC pipe pattern through the windows, and using it as a "hook" to get people in the door.  So, that's kind of what I am seeing in my head right now.  If you've had a chance to formulate some more sketches please upload them or e-mail them to me so we can all see them!

Perhaps on Tuesday, one goal can be to estimate how many lengths of cord we will need to fill the gallery space and match the vision that's in our heads.  That will help us figure out what materials we can afford to look at.

On Thursday we will be meeting with Kathryn at 4, but we need to let her know where.

Last week was tough!  (Or at least for me it was).  We're getting there though.  Once we smooth out the last few wrinkles we can focus on making and installing which will be fun!  See everyone on Tuesday!
